Tax Hike Drives Smokers to Vaping

The price increase that went into effect January 1 is costing smokers more than $20, with some brands exceeding $25 per pack of 20 cigarettes. The price increase is due to the excise tax, which is part of a series of annual increases. The last will be on January 1, 2020, which is part of the New Zealand Government’s drive for a smoke-free nation.

Mihi Blair from Hapai Te Hauora Maori Public Health said the organisation was urging smokers particularly wahine to vape as a way of kicking the habit.

“Whanau who are wanting to learn more about vaping or going smoke-free should contact Quitline,” Blair said.
