EVIDENCE KEEPS PILING UP: E-CIGARETTES ARE DEFINITELY SAFER

The evidence is unequivocal that vaping is much safer than smoking. But misinformation and scaremongering could still be putting people off switching. E-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking because they don’t contain tobacco. Inhaling burnt tobacco - but also chewing it - is hugely damaging to human health. Remove the tobacco and the combustion and it is hardly surprising that risk is reduced. Many countries still ban e-cigarettes and using them can result in fines or even imprisonment for vapers or vendors. SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS'S ANSWER TO VAPING BY TEENS

Attempting to beat back the rise of vaping among teens, the city of Somerville, Massachusetts, voted this month to limit e-cigarettes and menthol cigarettes to the shelves of tobacco stores open only to customers 21 and older. Somerville's move, the first of its kind in the state and possibly the nation, goes further by taking menthol and e-cigarettes out of shops, like convenience stores, that teens can enter. MARLBORO COMPANY BUYS 35% STAKE IN JUUL

The Marlboro cigarette maker Altria Group on Thursday announced it would pay $12.8bn to take a 35% stake in Juul Labs, a marriage between an old-line tobacco giant and a fast-growing electronic-cigarette rival looking to make inroads among smokers. “We are taking significant action to prepare for a future where adult smokers overwhelmingly choose non-combustible products over cigarettes,” Altrias chief executive, Howard Willard, said in a statement. In its release on Thursday, Altria said Juul represented approximately 30% of the US e-cigarette space, when factoring in online sales and products in specialty stores such as vape shops.
